Game Review: Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty

General Information

Somewhere in my heart there is a special place for duos: Tom and Jerry, Batman and Robin, Ham and Pineapple. In recent years Ratchet & Clank also worked their way onto that select list with a series of excellent platforming adventure titles.

After the cliff-hanger ending of Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction (ToD for short), Insomniac chose to develop a short follow-up "mini-adventure". The story picks up directly after the end of the previous title and follows Ratchet's attempts to track down Clank after his kidnap by the mysterious Zoni.

Pros & Cons
Pros:
  • Refined and polished gameplay
  • Enjoyable
  • Humerous and good voice acting
Cons:
  • High asking price
  • Very short

GameOn Magazine: Special Christmas Edition and Merry Christmas

Here at GameOn we would like to Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

To finish off the year our magazine staff have done a special edition of the magazine just for Christmas.

You can find them here

Low Res  (1 meg)
High Res  (9 meg)

The UK Christmas No.1 game is…

...FIFA09 on the mulitformat chart, and not Call of Duty: World at War as expected. Mario Kart Wii is the individual format chart winner, but misses out on the main glory as it doesn't have the multiformat advantage of its football counterpart. And on that bombshell its time to say this is my last news post of the year, as I take time out to play the games I love rather than write about them. It's been a pleasure serving you, and if you have found at least one news post useful then my work has been worthwhile. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Factor 5 closes down

According to insider reports, Factor 5 was "officially" closed down today. The developer of games such as Rogue Squadron and Lair had looked in trouble for some while now - with rumoured staff cuts and financial troubles rife in the air - but it was never thought to be this bad. The last game by Factor 5, the PS3 exclusive Lair, was noticeably average, but Rogue Squadron 2 in particular was a GameCube classic. Just less than a week ago Free Radical also closed down, so to have Factor 5 also shut up shop will instil an anxious wait to see whether more developers are to follow.

EA Games join Steam, in North America

A first batch of EA titles are now available to on Steam, with more to follow. The first titles include Spore and the Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Mass Effect, Need for Speed: Undercover and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Following them in the coming weeks are Mirror's Edge, Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 and Dead Space. While the good news is that Spore should have the highly controversial DRM SecuROM removed, these EA titles are currently only available on Steam in Canada and North America.

Free Radical Design smashed by administration

It's of great surprise and sadness that I report Free Radical Design has gone into administration. Details are scarce, but it seems pretty certain that the 185 staff of the British developers face a miserable Christmas. Reliable sources suggest that the front door of the studios were locked, with a note telling the staff to meet in a nearby hotel lobby for a final meeting. The last game released by Free Radical was the distinctly average Haze, but this news now means Timesplitters 4 faces a bleak and uncertain future. I will aim to confirm or deny this story as soon as more is known; I have never wanted a news story to be untrue like this one. Sadface.

Game Review: Shadowgrounds

General Information

Shadowgrounds: a name that fits the games flaws more than it fits the game itself. What first started as a very promising game had soon after … got lost. But then nothing in the world is completely dull; stick around long enough and you might just squeeze it onto your list of games as a last resort.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

1- Good graphics

2- Great atmosphere using shadow and light system

3- Good AI

Cons:

1- Identical areas.

2- Non-original story.

3- Little to no replayability

4- Ordinary sounds

Game Review: Assassin's Creed

General Information

Nine lives in exchange of one; a price that you have to pay, but are you be willing to pay it? Do they really deserve to meet their death just to save your own? It is a morale that stands with no answer. A fiction work made by various men with more variety in faith and beliefs, Ubisoft have put some thought into this title, and the pay off seems in its favour. However, the scales can't be all balanced when it comes to games; there isn't anything perfect in the world and games won't be an exception.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

1- Most realistic assassination game.

2- Leap of Faith from View Points.

3- Site seeing.

4- Hidden Blade attack.

Cons:

1- Repetitive systematic gameplay.

2- Too many abilities gained through levels.

3- Three repetitive areas.

Game Review: Sonic Unleashed

General Information

Now when I normally review a game I never look at anyone else’s reviews until I have finished mine. This is so I don’t steal any good ideas or base my opinions on what someone else has said about this game. Unfortunately, when it came to reviewing Sonic Unleashed made by SEGA, it was hard not to see the bashing this game off some of the bigger names. While it isn’t my place to say if their opinions were right or not, I hope my review can shed some light onto what can be a truly epic game.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

Fantatic graphics
Sonic is back
Interesting ideas with gameplay

Cons:

Story areas seem a little boring
Dodgy camera angles
Take ages to get anywhere.
